Make a Long-Term Difference... and Get Some Great Resources to Start 2011 Right!
The devastating earthquake that struck near Port-Au-Prince, Haiti on January 12, 2010 left an already-struggling nation with an overwhelming new set of problems. In the wake of the disaster:
- 50% of the population of Haiti are children
- The median age is 18 years
- and there are almost 500,000 orphans
While nations, organizations, businesses and individuals have invested in Haiti for decades, the media and publicity storm that drew so much relief in after the earthquake has died down. Now the people of Haiti are left with the long-term cleanup and rebuilding of the nation.
The problem seems overwhelming, but there is a way you can help.
We've taken on a project to help support one relief effort that has long-term sustainability. In 2010, Caring4Haiti was established to explore opportunities to work in Haiti. After multiple trips to scout out the best way to invest, the decision was made to build an orphanage.
As of late December, 2010, Caring4Haiti has
- placed a trained team in Haiti that has committed to at least 2 years in country
- escrowed funds and initiated the purchase of a 2.5-acre+ parcel in Ouanaminthe
- planned for the construction of an orphanage which will house 60 children in Phase 1
- established relationships in-country and planned for construction
We believe in this project. The organizations that came together to form Caring4Haiti have a decades-long track record of sustainable missions and humanitarian work beginning in Africa and reaching around the world. Their training and recruiting efforts are top-notch, and they have a strong financial base.
That said, the need for outside support remains great. And that's why we chose to get involved.
Epiphany Marketing & Nourish The Dream are traveling to Ouanaminthe to visit the project first-hand. We'll be joining a medical team, other volunteers, as well as Caring4Haiti staff in order to provide much-needed medical treatment, to see the new orphanage, and to work with local children in other orphanages.
